Moonsplash 2013: Feb 21-24th
The Moonsplash Music Festival is Anguilla’s preeminent musical celebration, and one heck of a party. Come experience the finest Caribbean reggae at this energetic 4-day festival at the ultra-funky Dune Preserve beach club and concert venue on the shores of Rendezvous Bay. Moonsplash is hosted by legendary Bankie Banx, the reggae singer known affectionately as the “Anguillan Bob Dylan”. Banx has released over ten albums and has played with such music legends such as Bob Dylan, Jimmy Cliff and Jimmy Buffett. Moonsplash was founded by Banx in 1991 as a roving music festival, with original concerts staged on Sandy Island, Pinel Cay off St. Martin and in St. Barths, before finding its permanent home in 1994 at The Dune Preserve at Rendezvous Bay on Anguilla.
Moonsplash has become the longest running independent music festival in the Eastern Caribbean and has become a top showcase for vintage reggae acts and emerging talent. Over the past few years, headline performers have included Tarrus Riley, Duane Stephenson, Steel Pulse, Third World, Inner Circle, Buju Banton, Gregory Isaacs, Culture, Toots & The Maytals and many others. Other surprise guests have included Jimmy Buffett, John Mayer and the Bacon Brothers.
Leave your shirts and shoes at home for this celebration of peace and love, which attracts some of the most influential names in reggae. And don’t forget to try Dune Shine, the event’s featured drink, which also goes by the name Enlightening Aphrodisiac.
The island has produced a number of popular reggae, calypso, soca and country musicians. Of these, the last is especially characteristic, as country is not otherwise a part of much Caribbean popular music. Anguilla’s Island Harbour, an Irish-settled village on the east side of the island, is a major centre for local country music. Soca is a major recent import that has become the most important form of dance music on Anguilla; it is often accompanied by frenzied, sexualised dancing called wukin up.
